Module 02: Flatness Vs Projection

REFLECTION

This module explores the various and unique ways in which a set of two-dimensional images of a Mario World can be fully transformed into a three-dimensional version. To complete this module, an understanding of perspective and the ability to perform Illustrator work were crucial in order to successfully conceptualize and produce a world in an imaginative 3D space.

Looking at the two elevations I was assigned to, an idea that immediately came to my mind was to have two hidden pyramids in the middle of my Mario World. I intentionally placed most of the other main elements surrounding the pyramids to hide its massive structure. I made sure that I was also constantly paying close attention to where I locate each element, putting one under another to create more depth to stacking them on top of each other to put an emphasis on its height. As an addition to my overall design, I also decided to use the water element and purposedly place some of my building blocks behind them to create an illusion of having objects that are submerged in the water. Another piece of addition to my Mario World was my sand-like water coming out of the pipes. This idea was added to my final design as I explored the idea of movement and fluidity as some of the characteristics of my Mario World.

This module had pushed me to get out of my comfort zone. It challenged my ability to creatively create a space that was abstract and chaotic in nature while still maintaining its aesthetic, which was a striking contrast to my design ideals. In addition to that, another challenging aspect of this module was the fact that it placed huge importance on vividly showing the interactions between each element, the space between them and the presence of hidden objects. Therefore, a constant self-reminder was much needed to ensure my overall concept and design was able to show these features.

Original Elevations

My two original elevations were notably very simple in shape and similar in colour. After spending some time observing the components that were present in the two images, I decided to pick 6 building blocks that would best represent my Mario World concept. I also ended up incorporating some additional elements that in my opinion would help make the identity of my world clear.

Building Blocks

The following building blocks are the 6 main elements chosen to build my Mario World. Each was picked based on its qualities that match my concept of having simple geometries.

Colour Palette

Developed through a series of experiments, this colour palette includes all the colours that best match the original elevations. Colour precision is extremely important in this module in order to successfully produce the most accurate representation.
